Cult Classic vs Popular Cult

Growing up we all have certain interests that we felt were unique to us. Certain music, clothing, games and movies identified us with our friends and family and defined the way we interact every day. With the internet becoming part of our daily lives many of us have come to realize that we we are not alone. There are legions of others with the same interests and passions and now thanks to websites, forums, and social media these people are right at our fingertips ready to chat.

With the connections and access now available to us all the line of what is cult has been blurred. Purists may still believe that only the cult classics are valid, but even popular media has its share of dedicated followers who are devoted to every aspect of its existence. Regardless of the age or medium of the work, they can all be classified as cult without weakening the impact of the true classics. We live in a world where The Rocky Horror Picture Show can coexist with Twilight, Call of Duty can sit along side Dark Souls, and Glee can be celebrated as much as The Wire because they all have a dedicated fan base and a similar (but different) cult sensibility.

Having popular media defined as cult may anger or irritate purists, but the way fans celebrate and support their favorite games or movies is what makes it cult. Instead of feeling like you are the only one that appreciates the niche things you love, you now can find more people who are inspired by your favorite works. People who want to discuss, debate, and collaborate based on this mutual love. It is all of the wonderful things that make the internet what it is today.

I enjoy movies, television shows and games but I also appreciate people who are passionate about fashion, Nascar, crocheting, and sports. We might not have the same interests but many of us share the same dedication to the things we love. I respect those who are willing to enjoy and support the things they enjoy without restraint or concern for what the public perception. We don’t care what our peers think of the things we enjoy, because we are not alone.

With the media and information that’s now available to us it’s the perfect time to take advantage. Stream movies and shows you’ve always wanted to see. Find those rare and obscure games from your past and play them through as if they were just released. If you don’t know where to begin, reach out to people with similar interests and discover their deep dark secret gaming or movie obsessions.

There is an infinite amount of awesome things to see, play, and explore. Now is your time to take action.

Some came into this world with a silver spoon, Levi came out wielding a rusty machete. Born and raised in Western New York state he spent most of his cold winters huddled inside watching bizarre and inappropriate movies for a seven-year-old. More »
